CHAPTER SEVEN
MADDIE was grateful that Nic seemed preoccupied the next morning, and their journey to the airfield was made largely in silence. He’d looked at her assessingly this morning, and Maddie had had to submit to his inspection of her mouth, her chin in his hand as he’d tipped her face up to him.
Just the touch of those fingers to her face had had her heating up inside like an exploding thermostat. He’d let her go and declared, ‘The swelling has gone down. A couple more days and you won’t even see it.’
Maddie had bitten back the childish urge to tell him that she could have figured that out for herself, but a weak part of her had liked his concern. Even if it was only perfunctory.
The small private jet was all cream leather seats and pristinely carpeted luxury. Maddie was intimidated by this further evidence of Nic’s wealth. He, however, was nonchalant, his large frame dominating a two-seater couch along one wall. Maddie chose a seat at right angles to Nic.
When they were airborne, and Maddie had turned down the offer of champagne, the silence grew taut between them. Maddie wished she had a book or something to pretend an interest in. She was far too aware of Nic brooding just feet away, and felt like asking snappishly what was wrong.
She risked a glance over and her heart flipped in her chest. Instead of a censorious blue gaze she saw his head tipped back and his eyes closed. His jaw was tense, though, so he couldn’t be asleep. She could see the dark fans his lashes made on those defined cheekbones, the faint stubble already forming on his jaw even though he was freshly shaved.
His shirt was open at the neck and Maddie had a tantalising glimpse of dark blond chest hair dusting dark olive skin. She looked back up and blanched when she saw him staring back at her. She’d just been caught ogling him like some lust-crazed teenage girl.
Despite his relaxed pose, Maddie could sense that inwardly he was alert, like an animal poised to strike. Immediately she felt nervous.
‘I have a proposition for you.’
Maddie felt even more nervous. She cleared her throat and crossed her legs. ‘What kind of a proposition?’
His eyes flicked down briefly to follow the movement of her legs, and Maddie pressed her thighs together unconsciously. Nic took his arms off the back of the couch and moved forward, resting his arms on his thighs.
‘I think you’ve proved how determined you are to save your estate.’
Maddie flushed to think of the awful helplessness she’d felt in Alex Morales’s room, how easily he’d dominated her. How easily he could have hurt her far worse than he had.
Defensively she said, ‘I wouldn’t do what I did last night again. It was stupid.’
Nic shrugged minutely. ‘You were just out of your depth.’
Maddie stung at Nic’s rebuke, but it was true. She wanted to get them off the subject of last night. It reminded her of too much raw emotion.
